couldn’t quite manage it
And sometimes the bear bites you, right? Judi and I would’ve had as much chance of qualifying in the LM Pairs last night if we’d gone off campus for a long, boozy dinner and forgotten to come back in time to play the second set.
It wasn’t as bad as the Women’s Swiss in St. Louis when Shannon and I sat out the first match after dinner and went minus. Minus? Sure, we got blitzed and suffered a couple of penalties. Turns out that failure to turn in the score on time can nick you a VP or so, and not one but TWO pesky cellphone infractions hit us too, and where we’d had 45 victory points after 3 matches in the final, we only had 40 going into the fifth match. Like I said, we didn’t go minus last night in the pair game, but we might as well have.
D’Ovidio and Gaviard arrived last night, it was so great to see them here and know that we are so close to the Women’s KO. I haven’t seen Gromova or Ponomareva yet, but I am sure they’ll be here. I pre-registered us for the Wagar last night and am interested to see how they seed the field. Finally, tomorrow starts the main event. I can’t wait.
Ran into Linda Lee in an elevator yesterday, I was really pleased when she introduced herself — she’s small but mighty and I really look forward to catching up with her later this week. I’m keeping my eyes out for The Beer Card’s Paul Gipson, too, we have tentative plans for dinner one night while he’s here. It’s great to finally match live faces with the writing voices of bridge bloggers I enjoy and respect. Hmm, maybe it’s time to throw a festive little cocktail party so we can all get to know each other. Perhaps today I’ll get that ball rolling.
