remixing metaphors

The primary lesson of my freshman year in bridge holds true:  commitments are made to be broken.  Things come up, plans change; players at the top of the professional bridge heap move around like deck chairs on a cruise ship. Looks like Larry Cohen is coming out of retirement to pinch hit for Geir Helgemo; a technical problem keeps the Norwegian away from the Spingold this July, so word is Sontag and Tor Helness will fill out a card and Berkowitz and Cohen are back in business.

Ralph Katz has decided to play for the other team — on the eve of the Summer NABC he’s taken the spot on Nick Nickell’s team so sadly vacated when Dick Freeman passed away last week.  George was quick to send our sympathies to Nickell, who lost his dear friend and partner.  In typical George fashion, he probably said something to Nick like, “If there’s anything I can do …”

We wish Nick, Ralph and the boys good luck in Sao Paolo and every happiness in their new life together.

Ralph Katz was the first person I thought of for USA2, and I’m pleased that he was added to the team. For George, he thinks of the country first before his own best interests, and that’s what your July 4th is all about.
