parlez-vous?
We went to Mexico for the holidays. Had a lot of fun, got quite a bit of sun, drank some sparkling wine, played a few social hands of bridge most evenings. The one I remember best went something like this: Lefty opened 1H, Partner overcalled 1NT. Righty was in there making life hard with 2H; this was my hand:

Zut alors! What do you do with this mess?
The beach vacation, all in all, was just what I needed. Since we’ve been back I’ve been getting all kinds of things done and feeling generally successful. My enthusiasm for bridge survived the trip; I came home raring to go – notes need updating, card combos need studying, time to get back to work with Judi and rendez-vous with Mike Lawrence (on CD, bien sur).
Excusez-moi another round of shameless bragging, but I’m beyond excited and can’t help myself. If we were of the Christmas persuasion I’d be thanking Santa for bringing me the gift I wanted most this holiday season; but instead I’ll seize every opportunity to thank my husband; my partner; my past, current and future teammates and my everlastingly lucky stars. Right before we headed to Mexico, I got The French Girls.
Daniele Allouche-Gaviard and Catherine D’Ovidio, to be exact. Go ahead. Check them out. My friend Claire (come back to blogging, Claire!) has all the best info. See what I mean? I was impressed by the thirteen world championship medals D’Ovidio and Gaviard have amassed over the past 25 years, their combined 3,563 WBF masterpoints might have factored into the calculus of my yearning. The dozens of European Championships in which they’ve medaled are certainly nothing to pou-pou, either. But what kept me pestering D’Ovidio and Gaviard was the idea I have that not only are they great players, they’re great teammates and great fun.
Don’t kid yourself – I’m super excited about having serious firepower come July, and I’m working harder than ever so I won’t need to rely on the big guns to solve my problems.

IF 2NT is lebensohl, I bid it and sign off in 3C. I do not think I’m brave enough to compete to 3S if the opponents bid again.
Congrats on your new team, babe! I don’t know those ladies, but they surely sound tres bien!

2 spades, but I doubt Lloyd’s of London would insure it.

We were switching around partners, but I seem to remember playing this hand with George. I chose 3H, hoping it was a transfer to spades and passed when he took the transfer.
George, what was your hand?
