hoping for a miracle

Tough times for the White Sox Nation.  The team that’s been sitting atop the American League Central all summer is reduced to hoping for extra innings.  We were at the ballpark last night (the grateful guests of Ralph Katz) and stayed until the end; the White Sox came within two runs of Cleveland, but our bullpen seems to have taken early retirement.  It hardly seems to matter how many runs we score, our pitchers are throwing batting practice for the Indians and it’s painful to watch.

It was great to see Jeff Miller last night; fun to hear some of what’s upcoming on the Old Prof’s blog.  He took a stab at my bidding problem du jour and came to the same conclusion Judi did.  You pick up:

S xx
H AKQJx
D KQxxx
C x

Partner opens 1S and you bid 2H, forcing to game.  Partner bids 3D.  What do you do now?

I would think that you would either bid 4D minorwood or 4N blackwood depending on your system. If you had all the keycards you could then bid 7D and if you were missing one then 6D. And if missing 1 key you bid 6 and once in awhile go down.

    Still streaking, Bob.

The only problem we had was that we hadn’t discussed this troublesome sequence. 4NT is quantitative for sure, but 4D was a preference until we decided to play it keycard.

    Partner had AJxxx / x / AJxx / Qxx.

I think 4C has to be an advance cue bid. I will bid this purely to agree Ds and then bid 4N on the next round assuming that’s keycard.
