never a dull moment
We spent a quiet weekend being grownups, George and I; we played bridge, got to meet a new niece, worked, napped, ate cookies. Both children had fantasic holidays of their own, so it was a boisterous reunion when everybody got home last night.
Around 8:30 George and The Big Girl decided to take the moped and go into town for ice cream. I was working out in the basement, The Couch Potato was well-ensconsed. The phone rang. Ordinarily I take a cordless phone with me into the gym so I don’t have to stop what I’m doing if somebody calls. Not last night; I had my whole team backing me up with the phone and doorbell and stuff, I knew I’d be able to push hard for 90 minutes or so. Based my entire weekend eating strategy around that workout. Like I said, the phone rang. I hopped off the machine and answered. George on the phone telling me everybody’s ok but they’ve wiped out on the scooter, everybody’s ok but going by ambulance to the ER.
Scooped the Potato off the couch in her nightgown with her crazy wet post-shower hair and dashed a few blocks across town where we ran into squad cars and fire engines and ambulances. Potato freaked out, accident victims freaked out, lots of drama.
Potato and I bounced between bays in the ER for a few hours, made friends with the nurses and flirted with the firemen who returned with two more loads before we finally headed for home. Lots of bumps and bruises, a pair of sprained left knees, one possibly more serious quadricep problem that we’ll know more about in the next couple of days. Dr. Mom’s predicting full recoveries.
That’s Aubrey Rae, she’s new. Photo by my iPhone.
7:30a update: Everybody’s still sleeping, which suits me just fine. I’m counting my lucky stars (there are many) and remembering how, in January 2006, we had ten months of COBRA health coverage remaining. Three of the four of us have not-insignificant pre-existing conditions and so for a while we were faced with the very real possibility of joining the ranks of the uninsured. Good thing George started the new business — that insurance card came in handy last night.

Wow, really scary. Sounds like everyone will be ok though. Quite a way to start the new school year. Thinking of all of you.

Hope everyone is doing ok today. This is totally scary… Tell George that next time he wants to take the kids for ice cream, he should call a limo. I know just the one: 1-866-windy!
Love to you all.
