weather report
The seasons of Back-to-School and Hurricane are upon us, not all that coincidentally. I’d seen them approaching but wasn’t at all prepared last week for Tropical Storms Middle School and Second Grade, which hit the local shopping mall last Wednesday morning and lasted through Thursday afternoon.
Retailers of insufficiently durable goods — sneakers, windbreakers, gluesticks, lunch boxes, fingerless gloves, shin guards, nightgowns and locker magnets — saw the most action.
Tropical Storm Second Grade slowed to a cheery drizzle then stopped completely with a joyful rainbow late Thursday when we found a couple of friends on the class list, but Hurricane HMS shows no signs of slowing. Latest best guess is sometime late next week. Until then, we are battening down the hatches and laying very low.
