close to the end
It’s been a great Summer Nationals. We made to the round of eight in the Women’s KO, where I had a really good time but was ultimately unsuccessful. Judi and I sat down against Sue and Rozanne in the first quarter and played pretty well (up 28). It was fun seeing the two ends of the tempo spectrum at the same table: nobody plays faster than Judi, and Rozanne can be spectacularly slow.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when we all sat down; after twenty four minutes passed and we were still playing the second board I thought I was in for a really tough day. Ought to have had more faith in my partner and friends — in the end, Rozanne sped up a bit and Judi slowed down a bit and we were still, like always, done first. They played Strong Club against me (which usually makes me nervous) and had all sorts of Weak NTs and things, but all of it came and went without any drama whatsoever.
Judi told George that we gave some back in the second quarter, she was figuring 15ish. Pamela Grannovetter and JoAnna Stansby covered a couple of my soft results but had some misadventures of their own, so we ended the first half of the Quarterfinal match in one of three dead ties. If I recall correctly, only Lynn Baker’s match had an uneven score at half time.
It was disappointing to lose a bunch more in the evening — I’d definitely have preferred to win that match, but in the end I enjoyed playing against and congratulating Sue. It was great to get confirmation of something I’ve long suspected but never actually seen: it’s fun to play bridge against good friends, no matter who wins.
On to the two-day open Swiss today; we have a great team: me and Judi, Hemant Lall and Ira Chorush, Louk Verhees and Jan Jansma. It’ll be a tough field — I hope we play against George. I told him again: if we play him, I’m playing him. No crying.

In the semifinals of the Flight A GNT, I got to use screens for the first time. It turned out my screenmate was a friend that I used to play with. Despite the seriousness of the competition, it was so relaxing and so much fun, though it would have been a bit more fun had they gone down at the other table in a game of about 35% on the next to last board, so we could have been winners instead of losers.

Bob, I had to laugh reading your commentt. The first time I played behind screens was in the European Championships in Tenerife; I played with Claudio Nunes and wore a coffee, two glasses of water and a diet coke when I couldn’t figure out where to put my hand, my drink, etc.
Glad you did so well. See you soon.

Speaking of “wearing” - y’all shoulda seen Stacy competing in the Swiss Teams! I’m not sure people that gorgeous should be allowed out in public - that is, without screens!
LOL……
Congrats to you & Geo both, Red, on your successes throughout the tournament.
