The European Championships are coming to an exciting end this weekend; the top six teams in the Open and women’s series will qualify for next year’s Bermuda Bowl (Venice Cup) in Sao Paolo. Bermuda Bowl champions Norway led the Open series before the start of play this morning, the Italians were struggling a bit and shorthanded, sitting fourth with four matches to play. BBO’s Roland Wald is mixing it up a bit, broadcasting tournament news and gossip. Have to admit I was surprised to read his reports of Angelini’s departure from Pau. In any event, these selection tournaments — the USBF championships, the Canadian, South American, European … even the Kenyan National Selections which I caught briefly a week or two ago, have been tremendously entertaining.
Summer’s in full swing in our little suburb. Shortly before 7am, college girls start pulling into the driveways throughout our neighborhood. Carrying venti non-fat coffee drinks and extra-fat keyrings attached to school-emblazoned lanyards, wearing tiny bikinis under flimsy sun dresses and ancient leather flip flops, they’ll pour sleeping children into stiff bathing suits and spend the daylight hours chasing them with tubes of sunscreen and cans of insect repellent.
