no room for mistakes
The field in the US Women’s Trials is very tough — there’s no margin for error and unfortunately, we all made some mistakes yesterday. Sue and I played four of the six matches; we started against Judi and Sylvia and though it was disappointing when I missed a cold slam (grand, in fact) all by myself, we thought we had a couple of big results too. Sue was doubled in 5 :C: and made it, so … yanno … I thought we were okay. Not so — Janice and Tobi at the other table bid 6 :C: and made that. So we cheerfully called out “Plus 750″ and the girls said “Lose twelve.”
Bummer.
Next match we played Hansa, Rozanne Pollack and the Jills. Our teammates bid the wrong game and couldn’t make it, Sue and I doubled them in a game which they made and a few partscores later we were down twenty-something.
Yuck.
Never give up. In our third match we played Shawn Quinn and Renee Mancuso and I struggled yet again to bid a big hand. We missed a game, our teammates covered us twice and we’re down a bit to that team, too.
We ended against Peggy Kaplan and Melody Bi. Missed the requisite slam but lucked into another one so we did win a few imps there. I got busy on defense when it was right to play passive and then, mercifully, I was done. Lost by some.
The last couple of matches were a disappointing blur. I didn’t hear about the hands, we had a drink and I went up to bed. Today’s a new day and I am determined to do better. There is much to be learned from all of this, of that I am certain.
