just about ready
Our dear friend Caroline, whom I first met years ago when she was a middle school student here in town, has come home from Lehigh for the summer. My kids are convinced that she’ll be the perfect summer nanny; since she’s actually *one of them* she’ll have the inside scoop on all the best fun. It’s easier to head to Raleigh tomorrow knowing things here are under control.
I’m as ready as I suppose I’ll ever be. Last year was my first Trials and I was all about the experience; George had already qualified for Shanghai so I knew I was going to the World Championships regardless. I didn’t expect to outlast the round robin, that wasn’t what it was about at the time. This year is different: I’m hoping to make it to the Knockout Phase. Only three teams advance (from a pool of seven), so we’ll have to play well.
And I’m starting to look ahead: George leaves for the Open Trials on the 28th, school gets out not too long after and my fiction journal’s migrating back toward the top of the pile of papers on my desk; I’m itching to get back to work. When I get back from Raleigh I’ll even have the time to catch up on lunch dates and hospital visits. Chicagoan, ACBL employee and my oldest bridge friend Stan Katz was in a horrible accident last week; prayers and best wishes for his speedy recovery.
Coming soon: Justin trying out Gazilli in the 8am Speedball. Since, yanno, he’s up anyway.
