what do you bid

At IMPS, equal red, first seat, you hold:

:S: KQJ62
:H: Q4
:D: 7
:C: AKQJx

You open 1 :S: and partner forces to game with 2 :D: .  An easy 3 :C: bid gets you 3 :D: from partner.  What now?

I seen no alternative other than 4C.
If partner next bids 4D then I am bidding 5D. If partner bids 4H I am bidding 6C. If partner bids 4S I am passing. If partner bids 4N I am responding to keycard in clubs.

    Sometimes I dance to a different drummer on these hands. I would have opened 1C - presumably 1D - then 2S. Over 3D, I continue with 3S.

Not sure if this helps - but - might give us slightly more room.

Wow, Bundy. You open 5-5 1 :C: ? Good to know!

I have a totally different view of this hand: I like 3 :H: , asking.

I usually do open 1C with 5/5 blacks, Red. If my spades were appreciably superior to clubs (such as AKJ10x vs Qxxxx or J10xxx, no way!) In many auctions, you really are able to conserve space and learn more about partner’s hand by doing this.

My worry about your proposed auction, Red, is this. Might partner not think that you have something on this order: AKJxx, Axx, x, KJxx? Partner still is not aware that you have an exceptionally good club suit - five cards long. And - I’m not certain how the 3H bid will further the cause, either.

Agree with 4C. I think if you were slightly weaker then 3H would be fine (asking for a stopper to try and play 3N), but I think your hand is strong enough to just bid 4C now since your partner made a GF you should be able to go past 3N safely.

Like Peggy, Stan and I may open black 5-5’s one club or one spade. We have a criterion though… we open one club on weaker hands and one spade on stronger hands. That way when we open 1S and partner responds with a 2/1 in a red suit, we treat 3C as a reverse. On this hand that would be applicable. We would open this hand 1S and rebid 4C at the end point showing the strong 5/5.
