blood alley

“We call this Blood Alley,” the cop said, “or Highway of Death. We get a lot of fatalaties out here, that’s why it says ‘Safety Corridor.’” I handed over my license without a whimper, took the ticket (going 79 in a 55) and really did drive much slower the rest if the way.

Luckily, we hit the end of the road part of the mega-migration late this afternoon. We waved at Klamath Falls on our way to Bend, putzed around (but didnt ski for lack of gear. Next time.) and headed out this morning. We planned to take the 79 basically to Portland, but instead we trekked 100 miles up the Oregon 26 which seemed to go straight through Mt. Hood country. It was probably breathtaking; unlucky that there was a bit of a blizzard. Tricky coming over whatever pass that was. It rained and snowed the whole way, never saw sun until we were a few miles from the border.

Once we arrived at Grace’s, though, things turned around. Her home is gorgeous and it is enormous fun seeing the pieces I’d only previously heard about. The girls are beyond thrilled to be here. I am too.
