from the road
We are having the best time. Vegas to Beverly Hills was a piece of cake, il Sole and Mr. Chow were highly entertaining. Waiting for a cab outside Mr. Chow we made smalltalk with a photographer and watched a petulant blonde smash her ‘66 Corvette into the rear end of a current Mercedes.
The best meal in Southern California was Din Tai Fung. Different setup, same exquisite soupy dumplings. Grace and the kids shared my enthusiasm — we ate fifty dumplings in about twenty minutes. We left Pasadena at noon and drove hard to Napa. We arrived late yesterday exhausted and crabby. A boozy dinner with my dear friend and I poured myself into bed around midnight.
I woke the kids up around 9 this morning, explained that we’ve come to Napa to go grocery shopping. We went to breakfast at The Boonfly Cafe then drove up to St. Helena to Dean & Deluca. My fabulous eaters wandered the market with me picking out the components of a feast. The amazing big girl picked tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, triple cream brie. The littler gourmande was all about the cornichons, vitamin water, marzipan puppy and sparkling pink lemonade. We stopped at the Taste of Yountville for a snowcone on our way back.
They swam while I napped, we feasted for lunch then struck out in search of the Russian River. We drove past it on our way to Healdsburg where we went for manicures and stayed the rest of the day. We had the nicest time. Only downside of Napa is no Internet connection. I’m posting from my iPhone…
George said we might get to see some whales on this trip, I’m totally excited about that. And I just discovered that we’re booked into a ski resort on Monday. How cool is this: day before yesterday my kids swam in the sun at the Beverly Hilton, day after tomorrow we’re going skiing. I love this trip.

aren’t you clever, my friend. We had Irish butter, Brie and red onion on baguettes.
And salami made in Seattle by Mario Batali’s father. I love to eat.

How does someone who loves to eat look as if she could play the lead role in a romantic thriller?
