i’m heading to houston, and i’m bringing …

The cherubs and I like to play a memory game that goes something like: I’m heading to Houston and I’m packing my new notes. Now the next person announces the trip, repeats all the previous items and adds a new one. I’m so excited about my upcoming trip that I’ve been playing the game in my head all by myself — I’m heading to Houston and I’m packing my new notes and several wraps and shawls, my computer, a couple of novels,  a blindfold for my poor partner, so she won’t see what I’m doing to her and my sense of humor.

Been looking forward to this tournament since we booked it at the end of August. Houston is the regional I play with my women’s team; I like to think of it as Spring Training. It’s great to get an early look at the partnerships, particularly now that they’ve changed. I’m looking forward to some Shannon and Jenny excitement, and I can’t wait to finally sit across the table from Judi. What I love about weeks like this is the time I get to spend listening to people I respect talking about a subject which fascinates me.

I’ve been around some pretty tight teams, closer to some than to others. Way back when, George and the Italians had some unbelievable times together. From the very first win when Alfredo couldn’t remember the starting time (they’d remind each other “One o’clock, eight o’clock, we win.”) Norberto bought that yellow M&M jacket in Phoenix, George made terrible fun of him and as a joke I bought him an exact copy for his birthday. You know how that ended. Once we went to Rome for a weekend and spent much of our time in Lorenzo’s car, amassing traffic tickets like spaghetti noodles in a salad bowl.

The bridge in Houston will be whatever it will be. On what I hope is the only snow day of 2008, what I’m really excited about is building some new stories with my rockstar teammates. Stay tuned.
