it’s fun to be good

The season of resolutions is nearly behind us, and I’ve been having some interesting conversations about commitment, discipline, and getting things done. Since we’ve been back from Mexico, I’ve spent a few solid hours every day writing fiction, working out, considering the blog and bridge and the significant relationships in my life and how to be better in each and every area.

One day a couple of weeks ago, the littlest cherub announced while we were making dinner together that “It’s fun to be good.” Indeed it is. The more I accomplish in a day, the happier I am. I love the hours every morning before the household wakes up (especially in the winter, when the place is teeming with wildlife — I’ve seen a fox and a coyote in addition to the run of the mill mice and rabbits and whatnot) when I push the story forward. The only time anything good happens in my writing life is when I’m sitting at my desk, pen in hand.

I picked up some material in Williamsburg that is just too good not to use right away, so I spent the last couple of days working on a between-sessions dinner scene that goes in an entirely new direction.  Will post segments from the fiction journal tomorrow, when I’m thinking about bridge but tired of writing about hands.  Also coming up — hoping to lure Justin out with a conversation about kids playing bridge and a look at the things we say at the table, to partner and our opponents.
