williamsburg
We had a terrific day yesterday; started a new KO, drew Robinson head-to-head in the first round and lost by 12, which felt great after being down 29 at the half. Then Shannon and I found the cutest place for dinner, in the charming part of Williamsburg a short drive away. Getting away from the bridge tournament felt great; taking a drive and a walk and sitting in a little bistro with no convention cards or hand records was totally relaxing.
Tried the one-session BAM again and our 15.5 was enough for second. The hands were mostly easy, until the penultimate board when I picked up:
:S: AQJ96
:H: A62
:D: AKT7
:C: J
I opened 1 :S: and partner bid 1NT, which was exactly what I wanted to hear — now we’re in Gazilli territory. I bid a cheerful 2 :C: and LHO doubled. Uh-oh, this is uncharted territory. We’ve discussed what to do with the big hand when they come in before 2 :C: , but nobody’s ever come into our Gazilli auction after. Shannon passed and righty passed, so I bid 2 :D: showing the big hand with spades and diamonds. Shannon bid 2 :S: and I bid 3 :H: , showing a really good hand and patterning out. Partner bid 3 :S: and I was done.
Heard many opinions about this hand, my favorite is that I should have redoubled. We agreed that partner’s pass shows clubs and her immediate redouble shows the positive (8+) hand, anything else is natural and shows the bad hand. How cool it would have been. We might have played 2 :C: xx, we might have found 3NT, we might have bid 4 :S: …
Partner’s hand was :S: xx / :H: Tx / :D: xxx / :C: AQT9xx. We won the board with +170 and there was some debate about whether we want to be in this game or not.  What do you think?

Stan and I think partner should have redoubled. You could have still played it there but you would have known it was right! Unless… XX is conventional by partner’s hand.
