what’s a girl to do?

First hand this morning with Sue, I picked up:

:S: Q95
:H: 2
:D: 98
:C: AT65432

At IMPS, equal white, first chair, partner opened 1 :D: and as I sit here looking at the full deal I’m still not sure what’s right. Can’t bid 2 :C: because we don’t have that. Can’t bid 3 :C: because that shows a constructive diamond raise. Can’t bid 4 :C: either, that shows a game forcing diamond raise. I hate to pass, is there an alternative?

NO problem, my dear! 1S! :)

Alternatively, just suck it up and bid 1NT. Partner may well figure out that you have clubs, depending upon how the auction continues.

While pass could work - you have just too much strength to do it.

Sometimes you gotta aim for the best result possible, rather than the best possible result.

agree with peg pretty much but i’m not quite adventurous enough for 1 spade. I’d just bid 1N and see what happens. if we buy it for that it may not be horrible since we’re white–looks like opps have a heart fit. if they balance with hearts, we’ll get a chance to bid clubs non-forcing.

I would bid 1NT. You CANNOT pass with 6 HCP… partner can have way too good a hand for that. 1S could work to pick off their spade suit and find a workable Moysian fit… especially if pard has a singleton club. The reason 1NT is so logical is that it nearly always has clubs (and partner knows that) so you stand a chance of simply finding the right strain and being able to play there at a “not-too-high” level.

I have heard of the “Hasty Heart” but the ” Speedy Spade”??

I think you just take a big sip of Starbucks and bid 1NT

I ended up bidding 1NT, went down two and felt like I could have done better in the bidding and the play. I anticipated more votes in favor of pass, but I’m glad my midwestern friends are with me.

    Sue’s hand was:

    :H: AT85

    Lefty led the :H: Q
