changing it up
I’m all about learning stuff. A good day in my life is, generally, one in which I’ve learned something of substantial value. I’ve been making liberal use of the Partnership Bidding section on BBO, dealing out a gazillion hands and working through them with Judi, Sue and Shannon. We’ve been making little changes to the system here and there, the most difficult for me (by far!) is ace asking. So far, I’ve managed to find 4 :C: (keycard), 4 :D: (keycard), and then my least favorite, 4 :S: (keycard for :H: ).
Today, bidding major suit openers with Judi, I picked up:
:S: -
:H: AK8742
:D: Q7
:C: Q7432
I opened 1 :H: , Judi bid 1 :S: . I rebid 3 :C: showing a 5-5 “player” of limited (less than a good 15) high card strength. Judi bid 4 :S: . I shrugged and passed, she said something like “oops,” and went for the undo button. 4 :S: was keycard for hearts. I can learn this. I learned 4 :C: keycard — if 3 :C: would have been forcing, 4 :C: isn’t more forcing … so with any luck I’ll start to recognize 4 :S: too.

Far be for me to criticize Judi Radin, but…I would think that was to play. For example with KQ109xxx, x, Axx, xx I think it is right bid. Otherwise you have to bid 3D and then next bid 4S which I would think is a slam try.

4 Spades is to play in any system. Hearts was never agreed and spades is a viable place to play. Not your error.

I am hopeful that I’ve found the pattern. So far it’s worked to determine if 3x would have been forcing. If so, then 4x seems to be keycard most of the time.
Lucky for me Judi and Sue weren’t around for all the years I inadvertently played Gerwood (4c-5d).
The point of 4 :S: keycard for :H: is to put an end to bidding slams just hoping we have the trump Queen. I’m smart, I’ll figure it out…
