getting back on track

My sleepy little Hinsdale is wearing a puffy layer of white this morning; I’m guessing someone more clever (or with more time on her hands) than me could write a “white hanukkah” ditty. I’m sorry to admit I’m using all my spare mental energy to try and find the long-handled snow scraper.

San Francisco: the great and terrible tournament. I met some new people and made some new friends, Shannon and I had a great time in the Life Master Women’s Pairs and we finished respectably in the Women’s Board-A-Match. A surprise team of Chinese women won the BAM and were the talk of the tournament near the end of the week. Took a few days off in the middle and saw some sights, indulged in my favorite activities (shopping, dinners, girlfriends) and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

The last few days weren’t as great. George joined me in exiting the last events early, which is never good. I played the North American Swiss with Sue Picus, Shannon, Jenny Wolpert, Peggy Sutherlin and Betty Ann Kennedy and we just missed qualifying for day two. George played the Reisinger with Ralph, Zia, Michael Rosenberg, Bobby Levin and Steve Weinstein. They were maximally unlucky, losing a tie-breaker to miss qualifying for the second day. That was, for me, the absolute worst. It’s brutal when someone I love is unhappy and there’s nothing I can do to improve the situation.

Congratulations to Jimmy Cayne, Michael Seamon, Alfredo Versace, Lorenzo Lauria, Fulvio Fantoni, Claudio Nunes and Charlie Weed for an outstanding performance in the Reisinger.

Red - you finished fourth! (And maybe higher, ahem…) Surely more than “respectable”.

As for the rest - yep, “yuck.” As one who missed day #3 by 1.6 VP’s, I understand the agony and the ecstacy.

Oh well. Another event is always right around the corner!
