half-time, round of 8
With 48 boards to play in the round of eight, USA1’s in pretty good shape; up 106 on Australia. All eyes are on South Africa in the Bermuda Bowl, up 54.7 in their match against Italy.
I’m still shaking my head that Italy picked South Africa, a team who’d beaten them in the qualifying round and had a little carry-over going into the round of eight. Reinforces my belief that opponent-picking is at best double-edged — insult the other guy, give them a little extra incentive to play hard and win. As fond of the Italians as I am, I’m right there with the rest of the world, rooting hard for South Africa. In the other matches, Norway’s beating China and the Netherlands are holding strong against Sweden.
In the Venice Cup, USA1 is comfortably ahead of Egypt and USA2 has some catching up to do in their match against France. Pulling for those girls to come back strong today and take out the defenders.
In other news, the Transnationals start tonight and the typhoon’s made landfall south of here so it’s a rainy, windy Monday morning in Shanghai.
