monday-tuesday knock out
The Monday-Tuesday KO is tough for me: in order to stay awake to play those last couple of boards on Monday night, I have to drink so much coffee that it’s tough to fall asleep. Come 9 a.m. start on Tuesday, I’m a little groggy. We survived the three-ways Monday night and played head-to-head Tuesday morning against Bob Carteaux and Sharon Fellars (formerly Robbins). I was soft in the first half, but we came back strong and beat them by 8 or 9 or so. Then met Hampton in the semi-finals (Joyce Hampton and her partner Lewis, David Berkowitz & Larry Cohen, Gary Cohler & Pepsi). I played terribly and we lost by about a hundred. Played the single-session Swiss last night and by the time we finished I was pretty tired.
But the 12 or so masterpoints we won for 3/4 were enough, and I’ve finally gone over 1,000. Yay.
A couple of interesting bidding hands, I’ll post partner’s hand and the table action this evening (that okay, Bob?). Jxx / xx / AQJTxx / Ax (everybody white). Partner passes and right hand opponent opens 2 preemptive hearts. Maybe it’s right to bid 3D right away, but I chose pass. Lefty passes and partner found a double. Righty passes. What’s your call?

Hey Redster; way to go with the 1K points! A seeding point for the Spingold too, doncha know
As for your hand, it is close, but I would have bid 3D immediately. Could you get killed for doing so? Absolutely. But - there is always danger in passing, too. Tough hand, though - and pass is surely a reasonable action (first time around.)
Now, what do you do to play “catch up”?
In part, it depends upon your partner.
Is partner someone who “always” reopens for you? If so, then I definitely would do no more than 3D.
If not - I would be tempted to go to 4D.
Still… tough to see how we are going to make game on this hand. Even giving partner a stiff heart, we still seem to have a lot of losers to cover for a minor suit game. But - if pard had something like: AQ10x, x, Kxxx, xxxx - and the spade is in the bucket, we’re possibly even making six!
What did ya do? What works?

Firstly, thanks.
I too would bid 3D. I don’t like overcalling on trash but you have a pretty nice 6 card suit and an opening hand.
But if I did pass, I would then bid 3H showing an interest in game. If partner bids 3N I will take my chances. If not I will bid 4D over whatever partner bids.

I also like a direct 3 Diamonds.
Having passed (presumably because I didn’t want partner to stretch to bid a game when I know she almost needs a perfecta (as a passed hand) for game to be any good) I don’t see any reason to change horses midstream. It doesn’t sound like the opponents have a 10 card heart fit (Lefty made an inspired pass if they do) so we almost surely have too many losers for 5 Diamonds to be any good. 3 Diamonds gets my vote (2nd choice, 3 Hearts, hoping partner has fast winners and the Diamond King or that the Diamond hook (which rates to be off) is on.) It’s only a white game.

I agree with all y’all, pass was risky. When partner reopened with double (no, she doesn’t always reopen) I really wished I’d bid 3D directly.
One of the things I like about pass the first time is that now I have the best hand I could possibly have. When partner reopened, I bid 3H (waiting to hear what she’d say now). Lefty doubled and partner bid 3S.
While I wait for her to wake up and give me the rest of her hand, I’ll ask again. What now? Bob? 4D?

Yes, I would bid 4D now and I am guessing that will end the auction.
