down in front

We’re pretty big White Sox fans, of that you are doubtless aware. It’s been a disappointing summer so far; great team playing well below their capability and there’s no end in sight. Though I certainly hope otherwise, my hunch is that Mark Buehrle has thrown his last game in a White Sox uniform. Last night, White Sox fans stood and cheered as he took the field to face the first batter, “Extend Buehrle” was spray-painted on a bed sheet and hung from the balcony of a luxury skybox. The crowd chanted “Re-sign Buehrle” several times during the sixth and seventh innings and when he departed in the 8th inning with a four-run lead, the crowd stood again and in response, Buehrle tipped his hat.

I couldn’t help but remember the last time I watched that exchange: a hot afternoon last July when Wrigley and Greg Maddux said their farewells.

The game had a decidedly must-win feel to it, and unfortunately we didn’t.

i just read an article about the white sox. it sounds like if they don’t do something spectacular soon we’re going to see the new guys in the outfield. that might be fun, although i’m not sure it will win us any games.
