bidding over 3S
Life is good out here in Las Vegas. We made it to the semi-finals of the Tuesday-Wednesday KO, losing to Passell, Wold, Kasday, Hayden & Norvich. I was sloppy and on short sleep, a deadly combination; we were down 30 at the half. I don’t mind losing in the semis; if you remember our fun in Houston and Gatlinburg, you’ll know that we are great at the one session swiss. Looking forward to some fun bridge tonight.
I thought it was pretty funny that two of the three hands I really struggled with today revolved around what to do when they’ve bid to 3S. (The third, incidentally, was about bidding over TWO spades.) About halfway through this afternoon’s match I picked up Q / KQTx / Jxxxx / Qxx. Equal white, partner opened 1D. Righty bid 2S and I made the obvious negative double, and lefty raised to 3S. What do you do?
Last hand of the match was a slightly different problem: Mike Passell opened 3D (weak) in 1st seat. Shannon overcalled 3S and Kasday passed. I held xx / AQ8xx / AK / Kxxx. What’s right with this hand? Once again, it’s 16 but I can’t open 1NT. We’d better work on this gaping hole in my bidding pretty soon. Anyway, what do you like over 3S?
Heading home tomorrow to cuddle with the littlest kid before the Cubs/Sox games this weekend. The boys of summer have been a little soft (ahem), and the Cubs traded Barrett to San Diego, where he’ll be reunited with Greg Maddux. Wow.

on the first one i’d go with 4 diamonds. with the singleton spade and support partner doesn’t really know about yet, it seems about right.
2nd one i’d bid 3nt even though i’d feel like it’s an underbid. at least it’s practical. how do you play 4nt here? even if it’s quantitative, that seems like a lot to bid on this hand, and definitely isn’t a good idea if it may be interpreted as blackwood.
