live from las vegas
While the Mixed events are well under way in Antalya, action kicked off last night in Las Vegas. Teammates all arrived safely and on time (thank you, Rose Meltzer!). We played head-to-head against Carolyn Lynch’s current Senior team (Lynch-Dawson, Shermer-Chambers, Berkowitz-Lair); Shannon and I played the first half against Shermer and Chambers, with Kranyak and Hurd at the other table against Lynch & Dawson. We were up 9 after 12, lost in the end by 6.
One of the early boards, I picked up (red against white):
void
KQxx
QJx
JT9xxx
Partner opened 1D, righty bid 1S. I made the obvious negative double, lefty bid 2S. Shannon bid 3D and righty bid 3H, alerted as a game try. What’s right?

I would bid 5D, might be down 1 but has a good chance to make. If partner has as little as xx, xx, AKxxxx, Axx it is odds on to make.

I am waivering between 3S and 4S. No one put a gun to pard’s head to bid 3D; my QJx of diamonds and the spade void are prime! Of course, KQxx of hearts might be valuable, too.
Trying to communicate to partner that I am not saving here; I have a good hand and values.
Of course, what is right - and what works - are often not one and the same!
You beauties keep on dazzling the opps!
