practice week
Shannon and I played at the club yesterday; despite a few lapses in concentration and one or two misadventures, we managed to win. Ralph came over late and stayed longer than he intended, playing kitchen bridge and giving me pointers. In the end, he had one key piece of advice: count.
Doesn’t that sound so easy? I’m terrible at it. It’s the best advice, though. So for practice, I’m playing some zillion and a half Bridge Baron hands and trying to train myself to count them. Is there another way? I had to laugh — look at this minors-oriented hand that it dealt:
Ax / Qx / AJxx /QJTxx
Partner opened 1C. I chose 2C (inverted). Baron bid 2NT and I bid 3NT. Pretty normal? Is there a case to be made for 1C - 1D? Should I have gone sniffing for a club slam? Was 2NT forcing?
Now that Shannon and I have gone back over our inverted minor structure, I wonder how we would have bid it. Partner’s hand:
Kx / KJxx / QTx / A964
Didn’t make 3NT. Lefty with six spades to the Queen and ten and both minor Kings …

So if you had tried both minor suits finesses you would have made it, wouldn’t you?
