more funny 2D
So this morning I watched Sadek & El-Ahmady for a few minutes (Africa’s Bermuda Bowl trials, featuring Egypt vs. Reunion). El-Ahmady held KJ54 / QJT84 / J73 / 4. Only a queen better than the hand I saw yesterday, but a completely different animal. I’ll open this 2D and if partner asks with 2NT I’d want to say “this is the best minimum I could have.”
It didn’t go that way, because Sadek (sitting North) opened a strong, balanced 2NT in first seat (holding Q62 / K7 / AKT2 / AKQ6.) If South had opened 2D, North would presumably have forced with 2NT, and south would show a 5-4 minimum with 3C. Seems pretty normal to bid 3NT with the strong hand. My instinct though, holding North’s cards, is to bid 3NT over 2D. I’ll talk myself out of it at the table as soon as I wonder if we could be making a slam. What hands should partner have to open 2D? AKTxx / QJxx / xx / xx seems pretty normal; easy to imagine all kinds of perfectas and we have plenty of room to investigate.
Here’s why I bother with this on a writing day: a character with an affinity for thin slams? Mix in a fondness for, say, redoubling. And a deep, dark secret …
